Adding Items to the Database

To add items to your database, go to Content in the control panel and select the type of item you want to add from the drop-down menu (Images & Files, Blog Posts, Articles, Links, Books, Events as well as any custom item types you created).

For most Item Types, the first thing you’ll enter is the URL. Webvanta will check to make sure that the item is not already in the database, and then it will read the page from the specified URL and pre-fill the Title field with the page title provided by the site. Depending on how well-written this page title is, you may want to edit it.

The other fields are all optional. For the description, you can enter your own comments about the item, or copy the first few lines of text from the original source. Note that copying more than a small amount of text may create copyright infringement.

For each item, you can also enter a page title, meta description, and meta keywords. These fields allow you to optimize each item page for search engines.

Adding Books

To add a book to the database, just enter the book’s ISBN. Webvanta will retrieve the book’s title, author, price, and cover image from Amazon.com. You may want to edit the title and move some of the information into the Subtitle field to enable a better display.

Note: Book information is not current displayed on the public site. This feature will be added soon.

Adding Events

If you select the Event item type, you’ll then be able to enter a start date, end date, and location. In a future release, you’ll be be able to use this information to present an event calendar.

Adding Videos

To add an embedded video, copy the embed code from YouTube or another video sharing site and paste it in to the description. If it is the first paragraph of the description, it will appear on the Category page. If it is later in the description, it will appear only on the Item page.

Using the Bookmarklet

To make it easier to add items to your database while you’re browsing the web, we’ve provided a tool that you can add to your browser.

The tool is what is often called a bookmarklet — a bookmark with a bit of JavaScript code in it. Called the Link Tagger, it is located on the Content overview page in the control panel at the bottom of the Knowledgebase section (click on the Content tab to access this page). Turn on the bookmarks (or links) bar in your browser, if it is not already enabled, and drag the Link Tagger text to the bookmark bar (or right-click on the text and choose Add Bookmark).

Now, when you are viewing a page that you want to add to your database, just click the Link Tagger bookmark in your browser’s bookmark bar, and a new tab will open with the Add Item screen displayed and the URL already filled in. (If you are not already logged in, you will have to log in first.)
